The Cookeville Algood Adventurer Club, a combination of homeschool students and students from Algood Christian Elementary School (ACE) in Cookeville, Tenn., decided to focus on safety. Kathy Kane, Adventurer director, and Dawn Janzen, teacher, went right to the Road Safety and Safety Specialist honors. “We had just experienced a tornado that barely missed our school here in Algood. Twisted and uprooted trees just missed us, and we knew that these were the patches we wanted to work on,” said Kane. The Adventurers practiced a tornado drill with flying colors. They also walked in and out of a building in the safest way, rehearsing in case of emergency. The children learned a lot about fire safety, and quickly became knowlegeable.
After the drill, they were met with two local firefighters and a fire truck. One of the firemen was dressed in his equipment, and explained the different tools and protective gear. He also showed how firefighters look a bit like monsters when dressed in protective gear, which includes face masks.
The children saw how the tools are used, and the firefighters explained the fire truck. An interesting item included seeing a thermal imaging camera that helps them to see through smoke.
Near the end of the meeting, the Adventurers discussed having a home safety plan, and the children performed their “safety detective” exercise where they record and report potential problems. They also learned the “safe meeting place,” and how important it is to know your address.
