The Fifty-Plus Club at Ebenezer Church in Augusta, Ga., made its annual 80-mile trip to Oconee, Ga., on June 3, 2017. The purpose of the trip was to present an uplifting, spiritual service, and to encourage and support one of the oldest members of the congregation, Annie O. Brown, and her twin sister, Gussie Turner, by helping them to celebrate their birthday. This recurring visit is one of the highlights of the yearly calendar for the organization.
On this occasion, the twins reached a milestone when they turned 101 years old. They showed great delight as the church family, consisting of about 25 individuals, including the pastor, church officers, and members, filed into the nursing home where they reside. The cheerful and alert women kept the group at rapt attention as they shared their wisdom and fond memories from the past. They remembered former presidents, world events, and church happenings which occurred during their lifetime. That God has blessed them with good health and sound minds was evident as everyone listened to recollections.
The other residents of the Oconee Nursing Home heartily joined in the singing, and responded enthusiastically as the program was presented. Music, poems, Scripture, congratulatory expressions, and a sermonette made up the program outline. At the conclusion the well-wishers presented tokens of love to the honorees, and the group melodiously sang the traditional “Happy Birthday” song.
The club, which was organized by Hardin Dunn, deacon, is actively involved in outreach in the Augusta area, and ministers to some of the local nursing homes and sick and shut-in people in the city. The club members are truly blessed themselves as they remember and seek to implement the words of Jesus, “Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto the least of these My brethren, ye have done it unto Me,” Matthew 25:40.
