The Marianna Church members held a special Sabbath program to honor the members who are veterans of the armed forces on July 1, 2017. The sanctuary was decorated with a display made by James Meeks, head deacon, that held not only the American flag but the flags of each branch of service — Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. The message for the day was brought by Charles Barkman, elder and a 90-year-old Army veteran, who was dressed in his uniform for the occasion.
At the end of the service, a special “challenge” coin was presented to all veterans in attendance. The coin has the words “Onward Christian Soldiers” surrounding the American and Christian flag on one side, and the words “Marching As To War — We are not divided, all one body we” on the other side. It was a moving moment, and an unforgettable Sabbath for all who attended.
