Sandra E. Oglesby, a member of Ephesus Church in Wilmington, N.C., is the winner of the New Hanover County NAACP Mother of the Year Award. She is the first representative from Ephesus to win this great honor.
Each year, the New Hanover County NAACP asks the churches in the county to select an individual to represent their church as the Mother (or Woman) of the Year, and support her in raising monetary funds. This fundraising project was initiated in 1955 to supplement the local, state, and national NAACP budget. The woman who raises the most funds becomes the county’s Mother of the Year.
Oglesby’s first assignment as Mother of the Year was representing New Hanover County as she attended the North Carolina Coronation Brunch. The Coronation Brunch was held at HillSong Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Coronation Brunch is held to recognize Mother/Woman of the Year recipients from across the state of North Carolina for their service to the NAACP, and their contributions to the community. The brunch is where the announcement of the winner for the state of North Carolina takes place. Oglesby placed in the top five from the state, affording her a prize.
As Mother of the Year, Oglesby will represent the NAACP in local events, including the NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet, MLK Breakfast, and MLK Parade, to name a few. Oglesby hasn’t been waiting around for special events to attend, though. Moments after being crowned Mother of the Year, she encouraged the congregation to invest in their health by participating in a University of North Carolina research project on the area’s water quality.
Oglesby gives credit to God and thanks to her husband, Clarence L. Thomas III, D.Min., and the rest of her family. She also expressed enormous gratitude for Derrin Davis, pastor, and the Ephesus Church family for helping to make this happen. They all share in this great honor together.
