Lay members at the Piedmont, Ala., Church have taken a deeper plunge into God’s Word in an exciting new project. Inspired by the attendance of a newcomer in the congregation, Rick Blythe, retired pastor, delivered a core message on the inspiration of Scripture for a Friday night service. However, a new idea was dawning as Blythe welcomed in the Sabbath. “Our church could benefit from a refresher on our Adventist beliefs too,” he pondered. “Why not encourage the members to explain doctrine from God’s Word for themselves?” A sign-up sheet in the fellowship hall began to fill with names as members, sometimes partnered with each other, committed to present a fundamental belief before the church each month. The messages proved to be a blessing to both the speakers and the congregation.“My topic was on the Holy Spirit,” says Debbie Stubbs, a church member who presented. “I studied a lot, and Pastor Rick helped me pull a sermon outline together. I was more than blessed; there are no words to describe it. After the message, a young person approached me, visibly touched. The Scriptures had been taken to heart. I realize that my words are inadequate, but God’s Words are eternal.”
