The Gethsemane Cougars Pathfinder Bible Experience (PBE) team was formed in 2014 when four young Pathfinders decided to be the first team from South Atlantic Conference to compete in their area. In March 2018, after failing to advance in the Southern Union competition, the team regrouped with greater determination.
These young people were reminded to trust in God and discovered the power of prayer as the team captain prayed before each round. Additionally, their parents saw the value of their children studying the Word of God as they dropped their tablets and phones and picked up the Bible.
This year the Southern Union competition was held at Southern Adventist University. There they earned first place among 35 of 38 aspiring teams across the Union. This was the first time a South Atlantic Conference team had advanced beyond the PBE Union competition.
The North American Division PBE national competition was held in Rockford, Ill. This was the first time in PBE’s history that 200-plus teams took part at the Division level. Getting to Illinois was going to be a challenge, but Larry E. Johnson, pastor of Gethsemane Church in Raleigh, N.C., was determined the team would make the trip. After consulting with the Conference president, William L. Winston, and through the prayers and financial support of the members of Gethsemane, the team was able to participate. As a result, the Gethsemane Cougars earned first place recognition among the more than 200 Pathfinder teams.
