Florida Conference had a tremendous Magabook program this past summer with 70 students from 13 universities and academies. The students raised $500,000 in scholarship donations and contacted more than 300,000 people.
The program was nine weeks long with a two-week extended program for those students who wanted to stay. As exhausting as a whole summer of canvassing can be, God rewarded the students with many beautiful experiences.
One of the experiences was in Miami, Fla., with Magabooks student Oscar Medina. He was canvassing in a Walmart parking lot and approached a man who got very upset and rude with him and told him to go away. Medina did not like the way the man talked to him. He told the man he would leave but only after saying a prayer.
After this short, but not exactly heart-felt prayer, Medina left and continued canvassing. Soon the man pulled up next to him in a truck and handed Medina a $20 bill. He then said, “You have no idea how important your prayer was to me. I was about to take my life. That’s why I was at Walmart getting gas. I was going to burn down my house, but your prayer showed me that God still cared for me.”
Medina then had a heart-felt prayer with this man. He discovered that God can touch people with both difficult prayers and heart-felt prayers. Medina was greatly moved by this experience, realizing that God can use you to reach people even when they don’t act like they want you there.
Many students had similar experiences, where people said that they were praying that God would send someone to encourage them and show them that God still cared. And then — Magabook students showed up!
