Around 500 Pathfinder and Adventurer leaders from 72 clubs gathered at Nosoca Pines Ranch August 26-28, 2022, for the yearly Pathfinder and Adventure Leadership Convention.
The smiles on their faces, despite the 90-degree weather, the occasional rain, and the mile-long line for food, proved that they are indeed Pathfinders at heart. Yalanda Williams, Pathfinder secretary and treasurer from Charlotte Sharon Church, has come to these meetings for the past eight years. She feels that there is no hardship that could take away the joy of being together with other leaders, because this is what being a Pathfinder is. Williams also says that since this is the first meeting since 2019, it makes it extra special to see old friends.
With presentations on team building, budgeting, and recruiting, the leaders were able to choose specific classes that best fit the needs of their clubs. In total, there were 46 different classes available, divided in six tracks that catered to both English and Spanish speakers.
Leaders were able to not only learn vital information to use on their clubs, but they were also able to network with other leaders and exchange ideas.
Brooklynn Bradburn, Adventurer director at Wilkesboro Adventist Church, said that attending helped broaden the vision for her club. It also helped her realize that she is not alone in the struggles and challenges she faces in her club.
Participants attended three general sessions presented by Tracy Woods, North American Division director of youth and young adult ministries. Woods focused on Acts 2:17, explaining the intergenerational call and how the children and young adults are essential parts in preaching the Gospel.
For this quinquennium, the Carolina Conference is focusing on discipleship as one of their goals, and there are no better groups than the Pathfinders and Adventurers clubs to carry this task. Hector Gonzales, youth and young adult director for the Carolina Conference, says, “The Pathfinder and Adventurer clubs are one of the greatest evangelism tools for children and youth. Pathfinders and Adventurers has been, is, and will always be one of the best ways to disciple our children and youth.”
By Sunday, the classes were over, but many stayed by to work on drills and listen to Ron Whitehead, director of the Center for Youth Evangelism (CYE), who came from Berrien Springs, Mich., to promote the International Pathfinder Camporee in 2024 in Gillette, Wyo.
