Collegedale Academy (CA) welcomed more than 100 middle school musicians to participate in the 2017 Georgia-Cumberland Conference Instrumental Invitational, January 27-28, 2017. Chis Massengill, chaplain, and Brent Baldwin, principal, greeted all with a worship thought and prayer in the auditorium.
Students attended rehearsals with Gregory Lindquist, CA’s band and orchestra director. Event clinicians were Esther Aviles, CA alumna from Florida, who conducted the 42 students of the festival strings; and Steve Martin, a Chicago-based graduate from Southern Adventist University, who served as the festival band clinician for the 70 students.
Rehearsals were Friday morning and afternoon, with breaks for fun and connecting with CA student leaders. They enjoyed recreation, snacks, lunch, and dinner. The students also received a treat from Martin, who played multiple riveting pieces on the banjo.
The event culminated with performances by both the strings and band in CA’s auditorium on Friday at 7 p.m. The strings performed first, serenading the audience with Beethoven and Mozart. There was even an event highlights presentation with video and pictures from the day. The band closed the evening performance. Both musical groups also performed at the Collegedale Church Sabbath morning.
Every participant left with sore fingers and chops, new friends, and an amazing experience!
