Health ministries of Punta Gorda Church recently hosted a Health and Wellness Sabbath, with 78 members and guests in attendance. The goal was to highlight healthy living in today’s times.
A special Sabbath School program began the day with a presentation titled “Healthy Choices, Better Living.” Attendees were encouraged with poems and songs to choose healthy foods and to exercise in order to live better, healthier lives. The audience also viewed two poignant video clips about the impact of good versus bad health choices in the lives of two men.
Ian Forbes, pastor, was the guest speaker for the worship service. His message, “The Battle is Not Yours,” emphasized dependence on God as challenges are faced.
After a fellowship luncheon, Teresa Lucas, R.N., health educator and nutrition instructor, talked about eating plant-based foods. She demonstrated a dairy-free recipe for spinach tofu ricotta-like filling. Stuffed shells containing this filling were sampled during the fellowship luncheon. An additional afternoon presentation by Keith Williams, M.D., pain management specialist, featured ways of treating and controlling pain.
Later in the day there was a roundtable discussion about prevention and treatment of cancer, diabetes, and hypertension. The panel guests were Justino Silvestre, M.D., oncologist; Eltanya Patterson, M.D., hospitalist; Andrea Walton, specialist on natural remedies; Cleveland Bloom, insurance consultant; Susan Stuto, breast cancer survivor; Cecil James, husband of breast cancer patient; and moderator Thalia Salmon, R.N., director of health ministries at Punta Gorda Church.
The roundtable discussion ended with a question-and-answer session and hands-on interaction with essential oils, natural curatives, and a health screening of blood pressure and blood sugar.
