Oakwood University (OU) in Huntsville, Ala., celebrated Healthy Campus Week, September 19-23, 2016. This is the second year that Oakwood has participated in the Partnership for a Healthier America’s Healthy Campus Week (PHA). PHA is a national organization that collaborates with private, non-profit, and public entities to fight against childhood obesity, and fits perfectly with Oakwood’s Healthy Campus 2020 program.
OU kicked off Healthy Campus week by wearing Healthy Campus 2020 and STANDOUT gear, and having a group photo taken at Blake Center. Teams of employees signed up for the Calorie Burn II challenge, to see who will lose the most weight by the end of the semester. Opportunities were offered for prayer and an early morning walk around the campus. The STAND OUT reading club discussed The Sleep Revolution, a book by Ariana Huffington.
The Dietetics Department provided a “Lunch Power” session featuring Caribbean cooking, and Bert Connell, Ph.D., R.D., director of Loma Linda University Department of Nutrition in Loma Linda, Calif., presented the topic “Health Reform in the Food Industry.”
Pictures were taken of students engaged in various forms of exercise to encourage their classmates to do at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day. Participants used the hashtags #Healthycampus, #oustrong, and #Healthycampus2020 when photos and comments were posted on various social media sites.
There were opportunities to win prizes that had been donated, which included a Fitbit Alta and a $100 gift card.
To conclude the week, approximately 75 students and employees enjoyed the outdoors from a different perspective — a hot air balloon ride over the south side of the campus, sponsored by Student Activities.
