Friends of Oakwood University demonstrated the spirit of giving and generosity by participating in #GivingTuesday on November 29, 2016, a global day of giving that kicks off the charitable season when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.
Yesterday, Oakwood alumni, students, employees, and supporters around the world overwhelmingly helped Oakwood exceed its $25,000 goal for the day. Kisha Norris, M.Ed., CFRE, executive director of advancement and development, happily reported that #OakwoodGivingTuesday 2016 brought in a total of $26,589.
Donors were able to go online and choose which fund they wanted to support. Some of the funds included Annual Fund, capital campaigns, UNCF North Alabama, endowments and scholarships, student philanthropy, 4HIM, and WJOU 90.1 FM.
Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y in New York City. Oakwood University is now one of 30,000 companies, non-profits, businesses, and universities involved in this selfless event.
Oakwood joined the Giving Tuesday program not only to get support for student scholarships, but also to instill a lifelong mindset of giving into current students. “We’re hoping that we can build in the minds of students to give back,” shared Lewis Jones, assistant director of development.
