For those who have had the privilege of knowing Tamara, it is evident that she is a passionate advocate for early childhood education (ECE). Since July of 2001, Tamara has served as the associate director for ECE in the SUC, devoting the past 23 years to advocating for the integration of ECE within the educational framework of both the SUC and North American Division (NAD), evident in the NAD Working Policy and the SUC Education Code.
Tamara’s journey includes graduation from Walla Walla College (now Walla Walla University) and an initial calling to teach in grades five to eight. However, her experiences in various school settings led her to focus on ECE, culminating in the pursuit of a master’s degree in this field.
Colleagues and friends have shared their reflections on working alongside Tamara, highlighting her unwavering dedication to advancing ECE. Conrad Gill, Ph.D., and past SUC education director, recounted a pivotal moment where Tamara’s fervor for change was palpable, inspiring those around her to join in her mission. At a staff meeting, Tamara resorted to climbing onto the meeting table to get her point across about the importance of the Church fully bringing ECE into NAD Education.
Eugene Brewer, Ed.D., former SUC associate director and colleague, admired Tamara’s practicality and drive, recognizing her abundance of common sense as she tirelessly worked toward establishing a robust ECE program.
Debra Fryson, past SUC education director, expressed deep appreciation for Tamara’s unparalleled passion and impact in shaping the lives of children, teachers, and center directors in the realm of ECE.
Rose Thomas, Ph.D., SUC associate elementary education director, praised Tamara’s compassion and commitment, remarking on her significant contributions to the field of education.
Keith Hallam, previous SUC education director, commended Tamara’s advocacy for early learners and educators, emphasizing her role in fostering a Christ-centered culture and solid foundation for future growth in ECE.
Tamara’s vision for the future of ECE includes advocating for compensation that aligns with the NAD teacher wage scale and recognition for ECE professionals. Additionally, she also envisions greater access to degree programs at SDA universities within the SUC.
As Tamara transitions into retirement with her husband Russel, cherishing more time together and enjoying shared activities like frisbee golf, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for her profound dedication and tireless efforts in advancing the noble cause of early childhood education.
